Madame Ratignolle is the maternally figure that Edna does not have, she is comfortable enough to talk to her and be herself around her. She knows that she loves her children and when she visited them she was glad to see them, but by the while she was back in the city the song no lasting echoed her soul (chapter 32, pg 102).
